• If you plan to hire a moving company for your relocation it is important that you show them everything that is to be moved. Be sure you receive a written estimate prior to the move and check to make sure the movers you have selected are properly licensed.

  • If you plan to rent a truck and tackle the move yourself it is a good idea to reserve a truck ahead of time. Ensure that any moving equipment you might need, such as a hand truck, rolling cart, etc is available, as well as any protective gear you might need, such as gloves, pads and back support.

  • Using new boxes of a uniform size will allow you to make full use of available space and make stacking more efficient.

  • Have on hand more boxes than you think you will need. Nearly everyone underestimates the number of boxes needed for their move.

  • Use reinforced, special purpose boxes to pack fragile or delicate items such as dishes, glassware and wardrobes.

  • Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes. Never pack fragile and heavy items in the same box.

  • Fill each box completely in order to facilitate stacking.

  • Protect your possessions during transit by using plenty of packing material. Ensure that all boxes are sealed with strong packing tape.

  • Number your boxes on all sides and indicate the contents or the destination room.

  • Do not store soiled or damp things. Moisture promotes the growth of mould and mildew.

  • Drain any remaining fluids from lawn and garden equipment that is to be stored. This will prevent corrosive damage.

  • Make sure mattresses are covered and stored flat on a level surface.

  • Never store anything that is combustible, such as paint, petroleum products and chemicals.

Making the most of your household storage space:

  • Place items you will need first near the door of the truck to make it easier to locate and access them.

  • Draw a diagram that illustrates where boxes should be placed during unloading.

  • Leave a space between items in order to promote ventilation.

  • Stack heavier items on the bottom; place light or oddly-shaped items on top.

  • Boxes should be stacked with labels facing out for easy identification.
